Advantages of Converged Networks

Chapter 1 Overview

Making Converged Networks a Reality

Advantages of Converged Networks

Because converged networks use a single, packet-based infrastructure for all data, voice, and video communications, implementing such networks reduces costs. The following are additional advantages of converged networks:

Budget leverage. You can reduce your telecom budget and devote the money saved to other purposes, such as information systems.

Integration of campus and branch office networking equipment. By deploying products such as the Cisco MCS 7800 series, the Cisco ICS 7750, and Cisco IP Phones, you can phase out proprietary technologies with high capital and operations costs—such as private branch exchanges (PBXs).

Support for emerging software applications. Use of the open, standards-based Cisco AVVID architecture helps you take advantage of the latest business applications, such as unified voice and e-mail messaging, web-based call centers, and computer telephony integration (CTI).

Cisco IP Phones do away with the costs and inconvenience associated with traditional telephone moves, adds, and changes by taking advantage of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
