structuresso that they can grow without immediately
becomingfragmented again.
Youcan optimize your boot volume manually by using
theOptimize option in the Performance window.
Youcan also configure Norton 360 to defragment your
bootvolume or the local disk that contains boot volume
whenyour computer is idle. Norton 360 automatically
schedulesthe optimization when it detects the
installationof an application on your computer. The
optimizationprocess starts next time when your
computeris idle.
Youcan use the Idle Time Optimizer option in the
AdministrativeSettings window to optimize the boot
volumeduring idle time.
Optimizingyour boot volume
TheOptimize option lets you optimize your boot
volumeto improve the boot time of your computer.
Optimizationof your boot volume maximizes the usable
freespace by rearranging file fragments into adjacent
andcontiguous clusters. When the drive head of your
harddisk accesses all of the file data in one location,
thefile is read into the memory faster.
Whenyou use the Optimize option in Windows XP,
Norton360 optimizes only the boot volume (for
example,C:\Windows). Therefore, it requires less time
tocomplete optimization. However, when you use the
Optimizeoption in Windows Vista or Windows 7,
Norton360 optimizes the drive that contains the boot
volume. Therefore, it requires more time to complete
optimization.
Youcan access the Optimize option at the top of the
securitystatus graph in the Performance window. You
canalso optimize your boot volume using the Insight
Optimizeroption in the Norton Tasks window. The
InsightOptimizerrow in the background jobs list that
isavailable in the Norton Tasks window displays the
detailsof the boot volume optimization process. You
