Command Syntax Description (continued)

Command

Description

mtu

Enter the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) to apply. The MTU value may be 256, 512,

1024, 2048, or 4096. MTU is specified in octets (8-bit bytes). Refer to Usage Guidelines for

more information.

no

Sets the MTU to the default.

Command Modes: Global configuration (config) mode.

Privilege Level: Ethernet and InfiniBand read-write user.

Usage Guidelines: The maximum transmission unit is described in terms of payload size. TCP uses the MTU to determine the maximum payload allowed for every transmission. Too great a value can overwhelm routers and result in data retransmission. Too small a value results in degraded performance because there are more headers and acknowledgements required to transmit the same amount of data.

Examples:

HP-IB# configure

HP-IB(config)# ip ip-over-ib-mtu 4096

HP-IB(config)#

Defaults: The default ip-over-ib-mtu unit is 2048.

NOTE: Infiniband hosts cannot handle change in MTU.
