Section IV - TCP/IP

DHCP offers dynamic IP address allocation. When a client receives an IP address, it also receives a lease (an amount of time the host may use the address). The lease times vary from 1 hour to 100 years, or may be infinite. When the lease expires, the host must stop using the address. DHCP may also be used like BOOTP, with a certain IP address always assigned to a certain device. Depending on the server, both methods may be used at the same time.

If the OkiLAN 6010e does not find a DHCP server after two minutes, it will timeout and assume a default address of 198.102.102.254. This follows current BOOTP and RARP behavior.

If the OkiLAN 6010e receives multiple responses, it will choose the first one.

When the OkiLAN 6010e receives an address, it sends an ARP message once every second for five seconds on the offered address to determine if another device is using it. If the OkiLAN 6010e finds another device is using the address, it will refuse the address and start looking for a new address.
