Intel Xeon EX versions of the 6000 and 7000 Series microprocessors are supported only on machine types 7145 and 7146.

Intel Xeon EX E7 Series microprocessors are supported only on machine types 7143 and 7191.

v The server can operate as a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) server. With SMP, certain operating systems and application programs can distribute the processing load among the microprocessors. This enhances performance for database and point-of-sale applications, integrated manufacturing solutions, and other applications.

vBecause of space limitations, you must use the microprocessor tool that comes with the microprocessor, when you install the microprocessor.

vRead the documentation that comes with the microprocessor to determine whether you have to update the UEFI firmware (server firmware). To download the most current level of UEFI firmware, go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/ support/.

vObtain an SMP-capable operating system. For a list of supported operating systems, see http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.

vYou can use the Setup utility to determine the specific type of microprocessor in the server.

vMicroprocessor sockets must always contain either a heat-sink blank or a microprocessor and heat sink.

vPopulate the microprocessor sockets in the following order: 1, 4, 2, and 3. The following illustration shows the locations of the microprocessor sockets on the microprocessor board.

Microprocessor 2

Microprocessor 3

Microprocessor 4

Note: In a one node server only, if your server has more than two microprocessors installed, you must install two QPI wrap cards in the server.

To install a microprocessor, complete the following steps:

1.Read “Safety” on page v and “Installation guidelines” on page 38.

2.Turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables as necessary to replace the device.

3.Remove the server top cover (see “Removing the top cover” on page 44).
