Troubleshooting System Memory

WARNING: Only trained service technicians are authorized to remove the system cover and access any of the components inside the system. Before you begin this procedure, review the safety instructions that came with the system.

1If the system is operational, run the appropriate online diagnostic test. See "Running the System Diagnostics" on page 181.

If diagnostics indicates a fault, follow the corrective actions provided by the diagnostic program.

2Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and unplug the system from the power source. Press the power button with the system unplugged, and then reconnect the system to power.

3Turn on the system and attached peripherals and note the messages on the screen.

Go to step 14 if an error message appears indicating a fault with a specific memory module.

4Enter the System Setup program and check the system memory setting. See "Memory Settings Screen" on page 61. Make any changes to the memory settings, if needed.

If the memory settings match the installed memory but a problem is still indicated, go to step 14.

5Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.

6Open the system. See "Opening the System" on page 85.

7Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on page 87.

8Check the memory banks and ensure that they are populated correctly. See "General Memory Module Installation Guidelines" on page 98.

9Reseat the memory modules in their sockets. See "Installing Memory Modules" on page 104.

10Replace the cooling shroud. See "Installing the Cooling Shroud" on page 88.

11Close the system. See "Closing the System" on page 86.
