vTake care to avoid dropping any metallic objects, such as paper clips, hair pins, or screws, into the server.

Handling static-sensitive devices

Attention: Static electricity can damage electronic devices and your system. To avoid damage, keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective package until you are ready to install them.

To reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge, observe the following precautions:

vLimit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you.

vHandle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.

vDo not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed printed circuitry.

vDo not leave the device where others can handle and damage it.

vWhile the device is still in its anti-static package, touch it to an unpainted metal part of the system unit for at least 2 seconds. This drains static electricity from the package and from your body.

vRemove the device from its package, and install it directly into the system unit without setting down the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, place it in to its static-protective package. Do not place the device on your system unit cover or on a metal surface.

vTake additional care when handling devices during cold weather. Heating reduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.

vWear a properly grounded wrist strap against your skin to help eliminate static electricity from your body.

Major components of the xSeries 450 server

The orange color on components and labels in the server indicates hot-swap or hot-plug components. You can install or remove these components while the server is running, provided that the server is configured to support hot-swap and hot-plug components.

The blue color on components and labels indicates touch points, where a component can be gripped, a latch moved, and so on.
