Disabling Protocols

After your network configuration is complete, you may want to disable protocols that you are not using to avoid unnecessary network traffic. There are four ways to disable protocols:

Use the printer’s front panel; see “Disabling protocols: front panel” on page 158.

Use the PhaserShare Administrator, if you are running NetWare; see “Disabling protocols: PhaserShare Administrator” on page 166.

With a TCP/IP connection and a World Wide Web browser, you can use PhaserLink Printer Management Software; see “Disabling protocols: PhaserLink Printer Management Software” on page 166.

Send the appropriate PostScript utility file to the printer. See the README files on the printer’s CD-ROM. The PC README file is in the UTILS directory; the Macintosh README file is in the Network Utilities folder.

The procedures given here for disabling protocols only apply to EtherTalk and TokenTalk installations (using a PhaserShare Series B Ethernet or Token Ring card). The PhaserShare Series B LocalTalk card does not support the protocols discussed here, so they cannot be enabled or disabled.

You can enable protocols by the same procedures; just select the command to enable a protocol rather than disable it.
