Specifying a Remote Engine ID
To send inform messages to an SNMPv3 user on a remote device, you must first
specify the engine identifier for the SNMP agent on the remote de vice wher e the
user resides. The remote engine ID is used to compute the security digest for
authenticating and encrypting packets sent to a us er on the remote ho st.
SNMP passwords are localized using the engine ID o f the autho ritative agent. F or
informs, the authoritative SNMP agent is the remote agent. You therefore nee d to
configure the remote agent’s SNMP engine ID before you can sen d proxy re quests
or informs to it. (See “Specifying Trap Managers and Trap Types” on page 5-4 and
“Configuring Remote SNMPv3 Users” on page 5-11.)
A new engine ID can be specified by entering 9 to 64 hexadec ima l characte rs. If an
odd number of characters are specified, a trailing zero i s added to the va lue to fil l in
the missing octet. For example, the value “123456789” is equivalent to
“1234567890”.
