Address for Multi-segment Network — Before you can assign an IPv6 ad dr ess to th e
switch that will be used to connect to a multi-segment network, you must ob tain t he
following information from your network administrator:
Prefix for this network
IP address for the switch
Default gateway for the network
For most networks that encompass several different subnets, it’s eas ier to first
define a network prefix, and then configure the host address fo r the switc h. An IPv 6
network prefix is composed of an IPv6-address and prefix length. The prefix length
is the number of bits (from the left) of the prefix that form the netwo rk add re ss, and is
expressed as a decimal number. For example, all IPv6 address that start with the
first byte of 73 (hexadecimal) could be expressed as 73:0:0:0:0:0:0:0/8 or 73::/8.

the undefined fields. For detailed information on the other ways to assign I Pv6
addresses, see “Setting the Switch’s IP Address (IP Version 6)” on page 4-9.
Link Local Address — All link-local address es must be configur ed with a prefi x of
FE80. Remember that this address type makes the switch acce ssible over IPv6 for
all devices attached to the same local subnet only. Also, if the switch de te cts th at the
address you configured conflicts with that in u se by anot her device on the sub net, it
will stop using the address in question, and automatically generate a link local
address that does not conflict with any other devices on the local subnet.
To configure an IPv6 link local address for the switch, complete the following st eps:
1. From the Global Configuration mode prompt, type “inter face vla n 1” to acce ss
the interface-configuration mode. Press <Enter>.
2. Type “ipv6 address” followed by up to 8 colon-separated 16-bit he xadeci mal
values for the ipv6-address similar to that sho wn in th e example , followed by
the “link-local” command parameter. Then press <Enter>.
