CHAPTER 1: Introduction

1.10 When To Use OMNIRemote

Most measurements require the use of OMNIRemote at the far end of the cable. For other measurements, OMNIRemote can be connected, but its use is optional. OMNIScanner detects the presence of the remote unit and automatically configures it for the measurement to be performed.

Twisted pair measurements requiring the use of OMNIRemote:

Autotest

Wiremap

NEXT and Power Sum NEXT

Attenuation

Return Loss

ELFEXT and Power Sum ELFEXT

ACR and Power Sum ACR

Twisted pair measurements not requiring the use of OMNIRemote:

Length/Delay/Skew

Resistance

1.11 Connecting OMNIScanner and OMNIRemote

OMNIScanner and OMNIRemote are used together to perform measurements, which allow the scanner to verify installed links or assist in the diagnosis of physical layer network problems. To accomplish these measurements, OMNIScanner and OMNIRemote are connected at either end of a network-cabling link. The end at which the scanner is connected, is referred to as the “Scanner end,” and the end at which the remote unit is connected, is referred to as the “Remote end.”
