Types of Connections

The type of network access can then be further categorized by the users who are accessing the network. There are two general categories: private, which requires tight access controls for known users such as employees, and public, which imposes access controls for less well-defined users such as guests.

Based on customer environments, ProCurve Networking has identified a few standard network zones:

Private wired zone—Serves a well-defined set of users, such as an organization’s regular employees. Frequently, these users have standard- ized computers and software, making consistent management possible. In a private wired environment, users tend to operate from a single location, making wired connections feasible. Desktop computers in an office environment or laptops used as desktop replacements are typical in a private wired zone.

Private wireless zone—Serves well-defined users who may need con- nections from a variety of locations. These users also want to be mobile, maintaining their network connection while they roam.
