CPU Heatsink B
To remove the CPU heatsink:
1.Turn on the workstation and enter Computer Setup (F10) (page 44). Let the workstation run in this mode for five minutes.
This action warms the thermal interface material between the CPU heatsink and processor so that the thermal bond loosens and can more easily be broken.
CAUTION: If you remove the CPU heatsink while the thermal pad is cold, you could lift the processor out of the socket, even if the socket is closed. This could damage the processor and the processor socket.
NOTE: Windows in idle state does not provide sufficient heat to warm the compound.
2.After warming the thermal interface, quickly shut down the system, disconnect power from the system (page 79) and remove the access panel (page 86).
3.Remove the CPU airflow duct by lifting up on the tabs 1 and rotating the duct away 2 from the CPU heatsinks.
NOTE: The CPU airflow duct is only required when two processors are installed.
