Using Polars to Optimize Your Performance

This section explains how to use Navigator’s Polars plotting functionality to analyze and fine-tune your boat’s performance. Intended primarily for the experienced sailor, Polars uses a group

of variables (such as apparent/true/corrected wind angles, boat speed, heel/pitch, and so forth) to determine what heading you should set your boat upon to achieve the best possible speed under varying wind conditions. Analysis results are displayed using several graph plots and data matrices, which you can modify (edit) to suit your needs.

A typical Polars plot screen is shown in Figure 5-13.
