Release 1.1.31, Part Number 78-11215-03 Rev. B0, May 2001
Chapter5 Configuring the MGX 8230 Shelf
MGX 8230 MGX to BPX Feeder
3. Download MGX 8230 PXM firmware.
4. Configure a new, MGX 8230-level Ethernet IP address for the MGX 8230 PXM as needed or other
SLIP or IP addresses.
5. Specify a name for the MGX 8230.
6. Specify the time on the MGX 8230.
7. Optionally configure a time zone for the Western Hemisphere, or configure a time zone relative to
Greenwich Mean Time if the MGX 8230 resides outside the Western Hemisphere.
8. Download firmware to the service m odules.
If the MGX 8230 PXM has no runtime (or on-line) firmware Image, begin with the boot-mode
description in the Bringing Up an MGX 8230 PXM With No Run-time Firmware section on page 5-4.
If the MGX 8230 PXM has a run -t ime firmware image, go to the section Bringing Up an MGX 8230
PXM With No Run-time Firmware.
Bringing Up an MGX 8230 PXM With No Run-time Firmware
The section describes the tasks for loading runtim e fi rm war e onto a MGX 8230 PXM th at ha s only a
boot loader.
Step 1 Establish communic ati on with the MGX 823 0 by d oing one of the fol lowi n g:
Connect a cable between your terminal or PC and the PXM-UI or PXM-UI-S3 control port.
If you are using an ASCII terminal connecte d to the co nt ro l port, the pr o mp t fo r the nex t com mand
is already present upon power-up. (If the display is skewed, make sure the terminal speed and
PXM-UI or PXM-UI-S3 port speeds are the same.)
If you are using a utility su ch as Hyp er Terminal on a PC, the f irmw are may r esi de o n e ithe r a f lo pp y
or the hard drive.
Step 2 Execute the command bootChange to configure boot-level IP parameters.
If the MGX 8230 has a redundant MGX 8230 PXM, execute bootChange on each MGX 8230 PXM to
configure unique, boot-level IP addresses. (During the subsequent MGX 8230-level configuration, you
must configure another Ethernet I P ad dr ess th at ap pl ie s to both MGX 8230 PXMs.) T he following are
the only parameters that are meaningful at this point, so press Return other parameters:
Mandatory host name is a name for the workstation . Fo r th e M G X 8 230 , en t er the letter c.
Ethernet IP address and subnet mask for the MGX 8230 PXM LAN port are mandatory (see inet
on Ethernet in the foll owing ex am p le ). Foll ow the IP address with a colon and a n et ma sk. The
netmask is eight hexadecimal nu mbe rs wit h no embe dded pe riods . Do no t t yp e spac es o n eit he r sid e
of the colon.
If the workstation fr o m which you download fir mware is on a subnet ot her than the subnet of t he
MGX 8230 PXM, enter a gateway IP address (gateway inet).
Note the three editing functi ons near the top of the followin g exa mpl e. Of these, typing a period to th e
clear the current field is the most com mo nl y use d.
