Problem	Possible Cause and Remedy
Dropouts	If faded areas, generally rounded, occur randomly on
	the page:
AaBbCc
	• A single sheet of paper may be defective. Try
AaBbCc	reprinting the job.
AaBbCc	• The moisture content of the paper is uneven or the
AaBbCc
	paper has moist spots on its surface. See “Print Media”
AaBbCc	on page A.7.

•The paper lot is bad. The manufacturing processes can cause some areas to reject toner. Try a different kind or brand of paper.

•The laser printer cartridge may be defective. See “Vertical repetitive defects” on page 6.16.

•If these steps do not correct the problems, contact a service representative.

Gray background		If the amount of background toner shading becomes
		unacceptable, the procedures below may help to clear
	AaBbCc	the condition:
	AaBbCc	• Change the paper to a lighter basis weight. See “Print
	AaBbCc	Media” on page page A.7.
	AaBbCc	• Check the printer’s environment; very dry (low
	AaBbCc	humidity) or high humidity (higher than 80 % RH)
		conditions can increase the amount of background
		shading.
		• Install a new laser printer cartridge.
		• Adjust the shading setting. See “Adjusting Shading” on
		page 5.4.
	Toner smear	• Clean the inside of the printer. See “Cleaning the
		Inside” on page 5.7.
		• Check the paper type and quality. See “Print Media” on
		page A.7.
		• Try installing a new laser printer cartridge.
