User Interfaces
A SmartSwitch 1800 contains four serial ports in the Voice/Data models and up to
eight in the data -onl y m odel s . Each ser ial po rt supp or ts any of the pr otocol s that ar e
installed (see Table 1- 1), with the exception of Voice, which is supported on two
Voice ports (and can be transported over any serial port configured for frame relay).
Each de vi ce als o i nclude s one LAN port—E t hernet or Token Ri n g, depe n ding on the
model.
Operator Interfaces
After it has been installed and configured, a SmartSwitch 1800 can function with no
keyboard or video device. (Therefore, such devices are not standard equipment.)
However, configuration, file copy (backup, restore, transfer, etc.), and monitoring
operations require a keyboard and screen, in one of several forms.
The typical method of connecting to a SmartSwitch 1800 is via an ASCII (VT100-
type) terminal (configured for 9600 bp s, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity), or a terminal
emula t or on a PC r unnin g P roco mm Plus for Windo ws. Eac h SmartS witch 1800 is
shipped with cabling to support connection to an ASCII terminal or a PC.
