Chapter 12Configuring Async Ports
Introduction
The integral Async PAD function in the SmartSwitch 1800 allows asynchronous
devices to connect to a frame relay or X.25 network.
Required Configuration
To run a port as an integral async PAD in a SmartSwitch 1800, make sure the fol-
lowing are properly configured:
Node paramete r s (Chapte r 4) . This is g ener al co nfigur ation tha t mus t be done
no ma tter w hich pro tocols will be r un i n the node .
Async PAD Profiles (page 12-2), which define the operation of the attached
devic es.
Logi n parame t ers (page 12-7) , whic h defi ne pas swords to be used w hen lo gging
into the SmartSwitch.
Load ed protoc ol s (Chapter 5): Async, plus frame relay or X.25.
Async po rt(s) (page 12 -8), pl us frame relay (Chapter 7) or X.25 (Chapter 8)
port(s) that will connect to the user device(s) and network.
Subscriber IDs (page 12-15), which identifiy user devices to each other and the
SmartSwitch.
Abbreviated address(es) (page 12-17), if desired. This featu re (describ ed later in
this chapter) allows short "nicknames" to be assigned to subscriber addresses, to
ease entry of addresses.
PVC co nnectio ns (page 12-18), which create "permanent" connec tions b etween
two ports in the node. A PVC can be created between two async ports or
between an async port and an X.25 port.
