Appendix D Implementing Remote Management Software (RMS)

Components of the Printer MIB

The printer MIB gives the network manager access to most of the in formation
that is normally accessible through the NIC command set for con figuring the
server with SNMP. Some objects identified by this MIB are n ot applicable to
the NIC.
The complete definition of the Printer MIB is provided in th e Printer MIBs in
DOS Format and Printer MIBs in TAR Format, which are shipped with th e
NIC. The MIB is provided in a subset of the ASN.1 syntax. The Printe r MIB is
composed of the following sections:
General
Cover
Localization
Input
Output
Marker
Media Path
Channel
Interpreter
Console
Alert

Information Provided by the MIB

The Printer MIB contains the following types of information about network
printers:
Descriptions. Printer configuration, location, and contact.
Status. Current operating status of printers.
Alerts. Reportable events from printers.
SNMP
SNMP is the network protocol used to communicate between manage r and
agent. Managers request information, usually through autom ated polling at
specified intervals, and agents respond. Though used primarily on TCP/IP
networks, SNMP can be implemented on other protocols, for examp le, IPX.
SNMP is a standard by which a network manager can get statis tics and
configuration information from the NICs and other devices on th e network.
This is done through a Network Management Station (NMS), s uch as
OpenView and NetView .
