Description
The mean opinion score (MOS). This is a high-level metric.
In voice communications, particularly internet telephony, the MOS provides a numeric measure of the quality of
human speech at the destination end of the circuit.
There is no algorithm for MOS calculations. This is a subjective metric based on the end-user’s judgment of call
quality.
The scheme uses subjective scores that are mathematically averaged to obtain a quantitative indicator of the
performance. To determine MOS, a number of listeners rate the quality of test sentences read aloud over the
communications circuit by male and female speakers. Listeners give each sentence a rating as follows:
•1 (bad)
2 (poor)
•3 (fair)
4 (good)
5 (excellent)
The MOS is the arithmetic mean of all the individual scores. It can range from 1 (worst) to 5 (best). In our context,
our MOS calculation is based on the consolidation of Jitter, latency, and packets lost, which give a good overview
of the real MOS value.
