About Downspeeding
If bandwidth control is in use, th ere may
be situations when there is insuf ficient
bandwidth available to place a c all at the
requested rate. By default (and ass uming
that there is some bandwidth sti ll available)
the VCS will still attempt to conne ct the call,
but at a reduced bandwidth – th is is known as
downspeeding.
You can turn off downspeeding, in w hich case
if there is insufficient ban dwidth to place
the call at the originally reque sted rate, the
call will not be placed at all. In this situa tion
users will get one of the following mes sages,
depending on the message tha t initiated the
search:
Exceeds Call Capacity
Gatekeeper Resources Unavailable
Downspeeding can be confi gured so that it
is applied in either or both of the foll owing
scenarios:
when the requested bandwid th for the call
exceeds the lowest per-call l imit for the
subzone or pipe(s)
when placing the call at the requ ested
bandwidth would mean that th e total
bandwidth limits for that subzo ne or pipe(s)
would be exceeded.
Default Call Bandwidth, Insufficient Bandwidth and Down speedingConfiguring the Default Call Bandwidth and Downspeeding
The default call bandwidth an d downspeeding behavior ar e configured via:
VCS Configuration > Bandwidth > Configur ation.
You will be taken to the Bandwidth Conf iguration page.

Default call bandwidth (kbps)

Enter the bandwidth value to be us ed for
calls for which no bandwidth val ue has been
specified.

Downspeed per call mode

Determines what will happen if t he per-call
bandwidth restrictions o n a subzone or pipe
mean that there is insuffic ient bandwidth
available to place a call at the requ ested rate.
On: the call will be downspeeded.
Off: the call will not be place d.

Downspeed total mode

Determines what will happen if t he total
bandwidth restrictions o n a subzone or pipe
mean that there is insuffic ient bandwidth
available to place a call at the requ ested rate.
On: the call will be downspeeded.
Off: the call will not be place d.

About the Default Call Bandwidth
Usually, when a call is initiated the endp oint
will include in the request the am ount of
bandwidth it wishes to use. For th ose cases
where the endpoint has not spec ified the
bandwidth, you can set the VCS to ap ply a
default bandwidth value.
This value cannot be blank. The
default value is 384 kbps.
