About the Local Zone and its Subzones
The collection of all endpoints , gateways, MCUs and Content Ser vers registered with the VCS
make up its Local Zone.
The Local Zone is made up of subzones. T hese include an automatic ally created Default Subzone
and up to 100 manually configurab le subzones. Each manually conf igured subzone specifies a
range of IP addresses. When an en dpoint registers with the VCS i t is allocated to the appropri ate
subzone based on its IP address. I f the endpoint’s IP address does no t match any of the
subzones, it is assigned to the Defa ult Subzone.
Subzones are used for the purpos es of bandwidth management . Once you have set up your
subzones you can apply bandwid th limits to:
individual calls between tw o endpoints within the subzon e
individual calls between an en dpoint within the subzone and an other endpoint outside of th e
subzone
the total of calls to or from endpoint s within the subzone.
The VCS also has a special type of su bzone known as the Traversal Subzone. T his is a conceptual
subzone; no endpoints can be regist ered to it, but all traversal calls (i.e. c alls for which the VCS is
taking the media in addition to t he signaling) must pass throu gh it. The Traversal Subzone exists
in order to allow you to control the amo unt of bandwidth used by trave rsal calls, as these can be
particularly resource -intensive.
The Local Zone may be independ ent of network topology, and m ay be comprised of multiple
network segments.
Local Zone and SubzonesConfiguring the Local Zone and its Subzones
The Local Zone and its subzones exis t for the purposes of bandwid th management. For full det ails
of how to create and configure subzon es, and apply bandwidth limi tations to these and the Defaul t
Subzone and Traversal Subzone, see the s ection on Bandwidth Cont rol.
