URI Dialing for Incoming Calls

URI Dialing

Example DNS Record Configuration

A company with the domain name exa mple.com wants to enable incom ing H.323 and SIP calls

using URI addresses in the forma t user@example.com. The VCS ho sting the domain has the

FQDN vcs.example.com.

Their DNS records would typi cally be as follows:

SRV record for _ h323ls._ u dp.example.com returns vcs.example.com

SRV record for _ h323cs. _ tcp.example.com returns vcs.example.com

SRV record for _ sip. _ udp.example.com returns vcs.example.com

SRV record for _ sip. _ tcp.example.com returns vcs.example.com

SRV record for _ sip. _ tls.example.com returns vcs.example.com

A record for vcs.example.com returns the IPv4 address of th e VCS

AAAA record for vcs.example.com returns the IPv6 address of the VC S

How you add the DNS records dep ends on the type of DNS ser ver you are using. Instructio ns for

setting up two common DNS ser vers are given in the Appe ndix DNS Configuration.

Recommended Configuration

If URI dialing is being used in conjun ction with firewall traver sal, DNS zones and DNS Serve rs

should be configured on the VCS B order Controller and any VCSs o n the public network only. VCSs

behind the firewall should not ha ve any DNS zones or servers con figured. This will ensure that

any outgoing URI calls made by end points registered with the VC S will be routed through the VCS

Border Controller.

In addition, the DNS records sh ould be configured with the a ddress of the VCS Border Cont roller

as the authoritative gatekeep er/proxy for the enterprise (see the App endix DNS Configuratio n).

This ensures that incoming calls p laced using URI dialing enter th e enterprise through the VCS

Border Controller, allowing succ essful traversal of the fir ewall.
