Alias Searching and Transforming
Zone Search and Transform Process
Zones are queried when an alias has n ot been found locally.
The search and transform pr ocess is as follows:
The VCS looks at all matches for all zones t o find all those
with either:
a Mode of AlwaysMatch, or
a Mode of PatternMatch and a Pa ttern String that
matches the alias being searche d for.
These matches are listed in order o f the Priority that has
been assigned to them.
If there are any duplicates in the list , the entry with the
lower Priority is removed. (T his applies to a zone with the
same pattern string and th e same transform but diff erent
priorities.)
If there is a zone which has an AlwaysM atch as well as
a PatternMatch with no tran sforms, the PatternMatc h is
removed from the list.
All zones with a Priority 1 match o n the list are queried.
For AlwaysMatch matches, the q uery will use the original
alias; for PatternMatch match es the query will use the alias
specified by the transfor m rules.
If the alias is found, the call will be for warded to that zone.
If the alias is found by more than one zon e, the call will be
forwarded to the zone that re sponded first.
If the alias is not found, all zones with a Pr iority 2 match are
queried as per steps 5 and 6.
The process is repeated until ei ther:
the alias is found, or
all zones with a match that meets th e specified criteria
have been queried.

Zone Searching and Transforming About Zone Transforms
The VCS allows you to change the alias bei ng searched for
before a search request is sent ou t to a particular zone. This
feature uses the PatternMat ch mode of the zone search
function.
To set up a zone transform, you must:
configure the zone with a Mode o f PatternMatch
specify the pattern th at the alias to be transformed m ust
match
specify the way in which the al ias will be transformed.
All searches sent to that zone that m atch the specified pat tern
will then be transformed and t he zone will be queried using the
new alias.
About Zone Searching
The VCS allows you to filter the searc h requests sent to each
zone, and prioritize the order in w hich zones are searched. This
allows you to reduce the potential n umber of search requests
sent out, and speed up the searc h process.
The VCS uses the concept of zone “matc hes” when filtering
search requests to zones. Each z one has up to five
configurable “matches” availab le to it. Each match is assigned
a Mode and Priority (describ ed below). The combination of the
two determines if and when tha t zone will be queried.
Using Zone Searches and Transforms Together
The zone searching feature and t he zone transforms feature
both make use of the PatternMat ch mode. You can use these
two features together or separ ately.
The remainder of this section:
describes the zone search an d transform process
explains how to configure zone sear ches and transforms
gives some examples of how zone sear ches and transforms
could be used together.
It is possible for the same prior ity to be given to more
than one match, either in the sam e zone or in different
zones. In this case, all zones with that m atch priority
will be queried at the same time.
Mode
The match Mode allows you to speci fy whether and how you will
filter requests to the zone. Alte rnatively, you can use this mode
to prevent search requests fro m ever being sent to the zone.
The Mode options are:
AlwaysMatch: always query t he zone
PatternMatch: only quer y the zone if the alias being searc hed
for matches a specified pat tern
Disabled: never query the zon e (this mode does not need a
corresponding Priorit y option).
Priority
The match Priority allows you to sp ecify when in the search
process that zone will be queri ed. Search requests are sent to
all zones with a Priority 1 match f irst, followed by all zones with
Priority 2 matches, and so on.
Each zone has up to five configur able matches. This
means that you can specify up to f ive different
transforms for each zone. This co uld be:
one alias transformed five di fferent ways
five aliases each transform ed individually
a combination of both.
