Chapter 1. Introduction
This manual explains how to use the functions of the IBM
®
Remote Supervisor
Adapter when you install it in an IBM Eserver xSeries
server. The IBM Remote
Supervisor Adapter is one of the products in the Advanced System Management
(ASM) family. The Remote SupervisorAdapter provides around-the-clock remote
access and system management of your server and supports the following:
vRemote management independent of the status of the managed server
vRemote control of hardware and operating systems
vWeb-based management with standard Web browsers (no other software is
required)
vText-based user interface
You can use either theASM Web interface or the text-based interface to access the
Remote Supervisor Adapter. TheASM Web interface is described in Chapter 2
through Chapter 5 and the text-based interface is described in Chapter 6 through
Chapter 8.

Remote Supervisor Adapter features

Standard features of the Remote Supervisor Adapter are as follows:
vContinuous health monitoring and control
vAutomatic notification and alerts
vBattery-backed event log showing time-stamped entries
vRemote access through Ethernet, point-to-point protocol (PPP) connection, serial
port, and ASM interconnect peer-to-peer network
vFull Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support
vE-mail alerts
vAlphanumeric or numeric pager alerts
vDomain Name System (DNS) server support
vDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) support
vRemote power control
vBlue screen capture (not supported on all servers)
vRemote firmware update
vAccess to critical server settings
vText-based user interface terminal access
vRedirection of the server graphical or text console (not supported on all servers)
vAccess to server vital product data (VPD)
vRemote start (boot) from a diskette image
