
Chapter 1. Introduction
This manual explains how to use the functions of the IBM® Remote Supervisor Adapter when you install it in an IBM Eserver xSeries™ server. The IBM Remote
Supervisor Adapter is one of the products in the Advanced System Management (ASM) family. The Remote Supervisor Adapter provides
vRemote management independent of the status of the managed server
vRemote control of hardware and operating systems

You can use either the ASM Web interface or the
Remote Supervisor Adapter features
Standard features of the Remote Supervisor Adapter are as follows:
vContinuous health monitoring and control
vAutomatic notification and alerts

vRemote access through Ethernet,
vFull Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support

vAlphanumeric or numeric pager alerts
vDomain Name System (DNS) server support
vDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) support
vRemote power control
vBlue screen capture (not supported on all servers)
vRemote firmware update
vAccess to critical server settings

vRedirection of the server graphical or text console (not supported on all servers)
vAccess to server vital product data (VPD)
vRemote start (boot) from a diskette image
