Firmware

Firmware is a category of memory chips that hold their content without electrical power and include ROM, PROM, EPROM and EEPROM technologies. Firmware becomes “hard software” when holding program code.

This “hard software” is kept in semi-permanent memory. It will not be forgotten when the power is shut off. Firmware programs can be altered, and are frequently revised.

An EPROM is typically erased by using intense ultraviolet light.
