This chapter explains how to unpack, configure, mount, and conne ct the
Maxtor Atlas 10K III hard disk drive prior to operation. It also explains how to start
up and operate the drive.

•Remove power from the com puter system (or expansion unit) before
installing or removing the drive to prevent the possibility of electrica l
shock or damage to the drive. Unplug the unit containing the drive to
provide an added measure of safety.
•Read, understand, and observe all label warnings.
Damage to the drive can occur as the result of careless handling, vibration, shock,
or electrostatic discharge (ESD). Always handle the drive wit h care to avoid damage
to the precision internal compo nents.
Follow these guidelines to avoid damage to the drive:
•Always observe prescribed ES D precautions.
•Ke ep th e driv e i n its a n ti - s tati c bag un t il re ady to instal l .
•Always u se a pr operly f itted wr ist st rap or other s uitable E SD prot ection
when handling the drive.
•Hold drive only by its sides. Do not touch any components on the
PCBA.
