Maxtor Atlas 10 K III hard d i sk dri v es are o u tfitted wit h plast ic s hock feet o n the
bottom edge of the base casting , near the cor ners, beneath t he side mounting holes
(translucent ), and nea r th e corners of the top cover n ext t o t he sc re ws (black). The
shock feet g ive an additio nal level of isolat ion to prevent the head and disk dama ge
that occa sionally occurs during unpacki ng, stagin g, and instal lation . Th e shock feet
attenuate the short-pulse shocks that occur when placing the drive on a hard surface.
If the drive is tested on a hard surface, it should be supported such that the shock
feet are not in contact with a hard surface (the drive should be supported in the
middle, between the shock feet).
Note: To provide optimal protection the s hock feet are designed to ex-
ceed the form factor when uncompressed.
1. Open the shipping contai ner an d remov e the packing assembly that contains
the drive.
2. Remove the drive from the packing assembly.
3. W hen you are ready to install the drive, remo ve it from the ESD bag.
The maximu m limits for physical shock can be exceeded if
the drive is not handled properly. Special care should be
taken not to bump or drop the drive.
During shi pment and ha ndling, t he anti static ele ctros tatic dis -
charge (ESD) bag prevents electronic component damage due
to electr ostat ic dischar ge. To avoid acc ide ntal da mage to the
drive, do not use a shar p instrum ent to open the ESD bag.
