Possible Cause Recommended Action
1. Toner cartridge is damaged. If the defect
repeats at any of the following intervals and in
the direction of paper movement, it is associated
with a component inside the toner cartridge. See
note below.
Printed side defects
Toner cartridge drum, 94mm (3 3/4 inches)
Developing roller, 51mm (2 inches)
Back side defect
Charging roller, 38mm (1 1/2 inches)
Inspect the drum for scratches or damage.
Replace the toner cartridge. Use the Repetitive
defect Ruler, Figure 7-25.
2. Transfer Roller has toner on it. If defects
occur on the back of the page at intervals of
61mm (2 3/8 inches), the Transfer Roller may be
dirty. This problem sometimes correc ts itself
after a few pages.
Clean the Transfer Roller us ing a dry, lint-free
cloth. DO NOT touc h the Transfer Roller with
your fingers. If the problem persists, replace the
T rans fer Roller Assembly.
3. Dirty Rollers. Any di rty rol ler in the paper path
may result in a repetitive print defect. Examine and clean rollers in the paper path
(refer to Chapter 4).
4. Fusing Assembl y is di rty or defecti ve. Clean the Fusing Assembly us ing al cohol. If the
problem persists, repl ace the Fus ing As sembly.
5. Gears are worn, causing slippage or jumping. Inspect the gears driving the toner cartridge and
the Fuser. Replace the Main Drive Assembl y if
necessary.
6. Paper does not meet specs. The surface of
the paper may be too coarse, causing repeated
marks.
Try a different media or paper lot (see
HP
LaserJet Printer Family Paper Specifications
Guide
).
Possible Cause Recommended Action
Defective toner cartridge. The photos ens iti v e
drum is wearing out. The line will grow wider,
with cross-hatching. Shaking the cartridge does
not relieve the problem.
Replace the toner cartridge.
