partitioning that you may require. The second component, following a reboot, sets up the software options and builds the networking environment for this machine.

5.3.1 Starting the Process

Insert the NT 4.0 installation diskette 1 in drive A: and the NT 4.0 CD-ROM in your servers CD-ROM drive, and boot the server. When prompted, remove diskette 1 and insert diskette 2. At the bottom of your panel, a message is displayed indicating the progress of files loading and the files currently being loaded.

Note

If your system error traps (a blue panel is displayed with error codes) after loading the FAT file system, it is highly probable that your server is infected with a boot sector virus. Use a commercial anti-virus application to disinfect your server before continuing.

The Windows NT kernel starts and the initial setup panel appears (see

Figure 54).

If you are re-installing Windows NT, press R; otherwise press Enter to continue. Windows NT now attempts to detect any standard floppy controllers, as well as any hard disk controllers and devices attached to it.

5.3.2 Choosing a Disk Controller

The disk controller chosen is critical because NT will not function if the wrong one is chosen.
