Installing a Flash-ROM Upgrade With FWTOOL
If your workstation uses Windows 95, you can use
FWTOOL to upgrade the firmware on the 1765 LAN
card by installing a flash-ROM upgrade. Unlike other
read-only memory, flash-ROM is rewritable. This
section describes how to prepare for and install a flash-
ROM upgrade using FWTOOL.
Preparing to Install
You can not install a flash-ROM upgrade across
LocalTalk. Remove any LocalTalk connections
before performing a flash-ROM upgrade.
FWTOOL can display a maximum of 32 printers.
FWTOOL cannot update firmware across a router.
You must use a PC that is in the same network
segment as the printer to install a flash-ROM
upgrade.
FWTOOL allows you to upgrade the LAN card’s
firmware without restoring LAN card parameters.

Unloading the Software

Your upgrade consists of a diskette containing the file
FWTOOL.EXE. FWTOOL.EXE is a self-expanding file
containing the software and data files you will need to
install a flash-ROM upgrade. Follow these steps to load
the upgrade software on your hard drive.
1. Insert the diskette containing the software upgrade
in the appropriate drive.
2. Create a new folder on the desktop of your PC.
3. Copy the FWTOOL.EXE file from the diskette to the
new folder on your desktop.
4. Double click FWTOOL.EXE to expand it.
FWTOOL.EXE expands into three files, described below.
FW.EXE: This is the utility that installs the upgrade.
NICFW.INF: This file contains a list of compatible
firmware files and the current firmware version
number.
<firmware>.DLD: This file contains the new
firmware. This example uses the firmware file
183e502k.DLD.
Now you are ready to install the upgrade as described
on the next pages.
