CWM to CWM Communications
Release 10 of Cisco WAN Mana ger has been designed to enable multiple CWM workstations to manage
a network with improved n e t wo r k synchronization and s c a la bi lity. Due to the size and gr owt h of
networks, it is faster to retrieve initial user data from another CWM workstation that is already running
and synchronized with the n etwork. An industry standard C ORBA architecture is used in Release 10 of
CWM to implement the communica tions between two or more CWM workst ations. The architecture uses
a server-client structure for comm u n ica tio n s b e twe en the CWM server and client p r oc es ses .
CWM workstations use CWM-CWM C omm unications to synchronize user da ta w it h each ot he r. When
user data is provisioned or changed, the CWM workstations will propagate the new data to the other
CWM workstations. The user is able to continue the provisioning of network data, even when
communications between a Primary CWM and Secon dary CWM ha ve been interrup ted. If for any rea son
the communications between CWM servers ar e interr upte d, the provi sion ing of the use r data will be
suspended on the Secondary CWM, bu t n ot on t he Pri mar y C WM as use r data p ro vis io ning wil l cont in ue
on the Primary CWM. During that time, the provisioning of user data and monitoring of the network are
not impacted. This is called the D egraded Mode of Operation. This c hapter introduces the CWM-CWM
Communications feature and al so pr o ced ur e s fo r r ecove rin g f r o m fa ilu r es t ha t m a y ca use the CWM to
run in Degrade Mode.
Note CWM to CWM Communications does not affect network sync-up.

CWM Domain

A CWM domain consists of a ll CWM workstations in a n et wo rk t ha t a re in communication wi th ea ch
other. Each CWM workstation functions as a CWM gateway, however one CWM workstation is
designated as the Primary CW M for keeping the user data, and is the source of all user data that the
Secondary CWMs can sync with.
You can define a CWM domain by specifying a list of CWM workstations th at will communicate with
each other, as describe d in this chapter unde r Configuring CWM to CWM Communications. A ll CWM
workstations in a given domain must be connected to the same set of networks to ensure that their
databases remain consist ent.
Note The network.conf file does not have to be the same on all CWM stations in the domain as long as the
gateway nodes specified in this file are part of the same network. Even though CWMs that manage the
same network can talk to each other, managing the same network does not require having identical
network.conf files on all Secondary and Primary CWMs.
