Version 10.5, Part Number 78-12945-01 Rev. D0, August 2003
Appendix A Internet Connec tivity
Functional Description
The typical and most like ly co nfi gu r at io n w i ll include the following:
MGX 8850 Release 2 with external Cisco 7000 family or Cisco 4500 series router connected to
AXSM port, or MGX 8850 Release 2 with internal RPM card to support Cisco 7200 router.
Cisco router supports ATM interface with LLC encapsulation and ATMARP protocol service, RIP
protocol and ILMI protocol.
Host/workstation is a Sun workstation running Release 10 of CWM software with support for RIP
and SNMP protocols.
FigureA-2 shows the logical connectivity between MGX 8850 Release 2 node s and CWM wo rkst ati ons.
FigureA-2 MGX 8850 Release 2 IP Connectivity
Functional Description
IP connectivity relies on three disjoint IP ho st s to build th e I P dat a p ath . Th e firs t are the PXMs, where
servers for the CWM, FTP, Telnet, etc. reside. The PXMs a re the end-point for the MGX 8850 R el ease
2 being managed.
The second are router or routers . Th is ro u ter s i nt er face w i th th e PXMs using SVCs to transfer IP dat a.
The routers will also interface w ith the CWM workstations that are ma naging the MGX 8850 Release 2
through some other network interface (usually ethernet).
The third are the CWM workstations managing the MGX 8850 Release 2. The CWM workstations
initiate data being sent on the data-path to the MGX 8850 Release 2. The CWM workstation knows or
learns that the routers are th e g o-b etw e en for all data to and from the M G X 8 85 0 Re lea se 2.
The CWM workstations will have clients such as CWM, FTP, Telnet, and TimeOfDay (among others)
that will make IP connections with the appropriate servers on the MGX 8850 Release 2.

PXM

The PXM software provides f or s e tti ng u p the IP Connectivity data-pat h. T h is c onnectivity comes in
several pieces. The first piece is the imp lem en tat io n of a cu sto m in ter face for the VxWorks TCP/IP
protocol stack. This custom interfa ce wil l hoo k-up to th e IP la yer of the pro toco l sta ck and will ha v e the
