SERVSWITCH™ MULTI

7.2 Features and Benefits

Liquid crystal display. The Hub has a front-panel LCD for easy configuration and identification. You can see system-connection information, check the hardware and firmware revisions of your modules, or troubleshoot system errors, all from an easy-to-use set of screens.

Front-panel LEDs. LEDs on the Hub ’s front panel let you monitor system power and error status at a glance. The green Power LED will remain continuously lit while the Hub is receiving AC power from either of its power supplies. The red Fail LED blinks when a problem is detected, then becomes solidly lit when the problem is acknowledged. The LED will remain lit until the problem is resolved, or begin blinking again if a new problem is discovered.

Flash upgrade capability. The Hub’s Modules, including the Front-Panel Element that controls the components mounted on its front panel, are Flash-upgradable. Flash-memory technology allows you to upgrade the Modules’ firmware without removing Modules or powering down the system. New firmware revisions can be uploaded into the Modules through serial connections to other ServSwitch Multi models in your system (see Section 8.13).

Hot-swappable components. The power supplies, fan assemblies, and the Transmit/Receive Modules in the Hub are all hot swappable. You can remove or replace these components without powering down the system or the attached servers, so maintenance can be performed at any time without interrupting system users.

7.3 Installing the Hub

Take these steps to install a ServSwitch Multi Hub:

1.First—before you do anything else—plan your layout. You’ll want to connect each of the two ports on each of the CAT5 Transmit and Receive Cards in your ServSwitch Multi system to one of the ports on a Hub’s Receive or Transmit Module respectively. Refer to the sample layouts in Section 7.7. If you still have any questions, please call Black Box Technical Support. (We strongly encourage you to call Black Box Tech Support anyway, to discuss your application, before you perform any large or complex ServSwitch Multi installation.)

2.When you have your physical installation planned out, install the Hub’s fan assemblies and power supplies in its chassis (these are shipped uninstalled to minimize the risk of them being damaged in transit):

a.Make sure that the power supplies are not connected to any AC outlet and that their power switches are in the “OFF” position.

b.Gently slide the power supplies into their mounting brackets on the left side of the Hub. (It doesn’t matter which supply you put in which bracket.)

c.Connect a power cord to the IEC 320 inlet on each of the power supplies. Plug the other end of each power cord into a working AC outlet. Switch on both of the power supplies and verify that the fan modules work—the fans should start running right away.
