6.2 Determining Where to Install Cards and Attach Equipment

SERVSWITCH™ MULTI

6.2 Determining Where to Install Cards and Attach Equipment

Once you’ve chosen the best placements and system configuration for your ServSwitch Multis, you’ll need to determine (a) which Expansion Cards to install in which Switches, (b) where to put your computers and user equipment (which will determine where you install your CPU and User-Interface Cards), and (c) where to put your terminals, routers, etc. if you’re connecting any to the system (which will determine where you install your Management and Serial Control Cards).

As you plan, here’s what you need to keep in mind about how the Expansion Cards work:

1.In order for a computer attached to a ServSwitch Multi to transmit its video signal to consoles attached to other Switches in the system, you must install at least one Transmit Card in the computer’s Switch. Refer to Figure 6-5.

2.In order for a console attached to a ServSwitch Multi to receive signals from computers attached to other Switches in the system, you must install at least one Receive Card in the console’s Switch. Refer to Figure 6-5.

SWITCH 0

In this example, users on Switch 2 have access to the local computers (the ones attached to their own Switch) only, because there is no Receive Card installed in Switch 2.

Users on Switch 1 can not only access the local computers, they can also access the computers attached to Switch 2, because a Transmit Card is installed in Switch 2 and a Receive Card is installed in Switch 1. But they cannot reach the computers on Switch 0 because no Transmit Card is installed in Switch 0.

Users on Switch 0 have access to all computers in the system—the local computers plus the computers on Switches 1 and 2— because the Transmit Cards installed in Switches 1 and 2 are connected (directly in Switch 1’s case, indirectly in Switch 2’s) to the Receive Card installed in Switch 0.

Figure 6-5. An expanded system that illustrates the Transmit/Receive mechanism.
