7.1Introduction

Server Message Block (SMB) is a protocol for sharing files and/or printers through the network. It is supported by Windows OS. You can use NetBEUI or TCP/IP as the transport protocol for SMB. This section explains the operating environment and setup procedure for using SMB. Before setting up SMB, check the following information.

7.1.1System Structure

SMB operates in an environment where the port is set and the printer connected to the network. It uses NetBEUI or TCP/IP as the transport protocol.

• You can use either NetBEUI or TCP/IP, or even both as the transport protocol for

SMB. When setting up the printer, refer to "7.2 Setting NetBEUI in Printer" for details on NetBEUI and to "7.3 Setting TCP/IP in Printer" for TCP/IP.

You will need to setup the IP address in the computer and printer if you are using TCP/IP.
