Chapter 1 Introducing the Business Communications Manager 19
Installation and Maintenance Guide
Power supply — The BCM1000 can have a single (standard) po we r supply modul e or a redu ndant
power supply module. Single power supply Business Communications Manager equipment can
also be upgraded to redundant Bu siness Communications Manager system by install ing a
redundant power suppl y in place of the standard powe r supply.
Cooling fan — The BCM1000 can ha ve a single coolin g fan or a redundant set of fans. Units with
redundant power suppl ies always have two cooling f ans.
BCM1000 systems upgraded from 2.0 hardware to redundant power supply systems use a
piggy-back fan conf iguration.
The BCM1000 2.5 hardware has side-by-side fan ports.
Hard disk — The BCM1000 can have eithe r a single hard dis k or a mirrored disk config uration
(RAID 1). Units de livere d with the mirrored disk con figurati on can also have redundant powe r
supply and fan assemblies installed, although redundant power supplies and fans are not a
requirement for r unning disk mirroring.
The Business Communications Manager supports the RAID 1 disk mirr oring protoc ol. This
protocol create s an exact da ta duplica te of the system hard disk on a second, co-l ocated hard dis k
within the BCM1000. I f one of the hard disks becomes inoperable , the system continues with
normal operation on the remaining disk. You can then schedule disk replacement during normal
maintenance periods. Thi s process do es not replac e your BRU backup disks, which should still be
run on a regular sc hedule a nd should be kept offsite. The data backup and recovery process (BRU)
are discussed in the Business Communications Manager Programming Operations Guide.
Note: Power supplies for the B CM1000 are auto-swi tching power suppl ies.
The power supply on an or igina l 2.0 system has a voltage switch that must be set to the
correct voltage.
