The ATLAS 550 router uses the Ethernet port to transmit local area network (LAN) traffic over the wide area network (WAN) to a remote LAN. By inte- grating the router into the network access device, you benefit from the cost savings of not requiring an external router. Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-3 illus- trate a conversion from an application with external routers to one using integral routers within ADTRAN products.

Access Switch

The ATLAS 550 includes an advanced access architecture for switching dialup calls to specific ports or DS0s. As an access switch functioning in user-to-user network and user-to-user mode, ATLAS 550 consolidates multiple basic rate ISDN (BRI) connections onto T1/PRI access lines. Additionally, BRI-to-BRI, BRI-to-PRI, and PRI-to-PRI switching are supported. The ATLAS 550 also converts between ISDN D channel (PRI or
