Camshaft, Camshaft Chain

Camshaft Removal

Remove:

Seat (see Hull/Engine Hood chapter)

Spark Plugs (see Periodic Maintenance chapter) Cylinder Head Cover (see Cylinder Head Cover Re- moval)

Air Filter (see Fuel System (DFI) chapter)

Position the crankshaft at #1, #4 piston TDC as follows.

Using the shaft wrench [A], turn the crankshaft counter- clockwise [B] and set the crankshaft at #1, 4 piston TDC.

Special Tool - Shaft Wrench: 57001-1551

The timing marks [A] must be aligned with the cylinder head upper surface [B] as shown.

Remove:Camshaft Chain Tensioner (see Camshaft Chain Ten- sioner Removal)

Camshaft Cap Bolts [A]

Upper Camshaft Chain Guide [B] Camshaft Cap [C]

Camshafts

Stuff a clean cloth into the chain tunnel to keep any parts from dropping into the crankcase.

CAUTION

The crankshaft may be turned while the camshafts are removed. Always pull the chain taut while turn- ing the crankshaft. This avoids kinking the chain on the lower (crankshaft) sprocket. A kinked chain could damage both the chain and the sprocket.
