PERIODIC MAINTENANCE 2-19

Periodic Maintenance Procedures

Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the valve lifters and ap- ply engine oil to the shims, and install them.

Install the camshafts. Be sure to install the camshafts properly (see Engine Top End chapter).

Remeasure any valve clearance that was adjusted.

Readjust if necessary.

CAUTION

Do not put shim stock under the shim. This may cause the shim to pop out at high rpm, causing ex- tensive engine damage.

Do not grind the shim. This may cause it to fracture, causing extensive engine damage.

Engine Mounting Bolts Inspection and Tightness

Check the tightness of the engine mounting bolts [A]. If there are loose bolts, remove the bolts.

Apply a non-permanent locking agent to the engine mounting bolts and tighten them.

Torque - Engine Mounting Bolts: 36 N·m (3.7 kgf·m, 27 ft·lb)

Engine Bottom End

Coupling Damper Inspection

Remove:

Seat (see Hull/Engine Hood chapter)

Engine (see Engine Removal/Installation chapter)

Remove the coupling damper [A] and inspect it for wear [B] and deterioration.

If it is grooved or misshapen, replace it with a new damper.

If there is any doubt as to coupler condition, replace it.

Cooling and Bilge Systems

Cooling System Flushing

To prevent sand or salt deposits from accumulating in the cooling system, it must be flushed occasionally. Flush the system according to the Periodic Maintenance Chart, after each use in salt water, or whenever there is reduced water flow from the bypass outlet on the right side of the hull.
