It is not necessary for a single type of fiber to be used from one end of a connection to another. However, doing so will provide you with longer distances between devices and may simplify troubleshooting and cable management issues as well. Should you choose to use different types/diameters of fiber, use the tables in the appendices of IBM 8285 Nways ATM Workgroup Switch: Installation and User′s Guide, SA33-0381 to determine if the optical budget for each port is adequate.
