Basic operationsIntroduction
Some buttons have more than one function assigned to them; use [SHIFT] to access these additional
functions.
Hold down [SHIFT] and press the desired button.
In this manual, operations accessed using [SHIFT] are indicated as [SHIFT] + [(button name)]. Use [SHIFT]
to access the functions whose names are printed inside a blue frame on the panel of the MV-8800.
Here’s how to input alphanumeric characters, such as when specifying a file name.

Move the cursor to the desired location.

The cursor is the highlighted character, as shown below.

Turn the VALUE dial.

Input the desired character. To move to the next place (toward the right) the right cursor button.
If you use the VALUE dial to input characters, turning the dial toward the right will select characters in the order
of “(a blank space) ! “ # $ % & ’ ( ) * + , - . / 0–9 : ; < = > ? @ A–Z [ \ ] ^ _` a–z {
|
} ~ • ”.
• [F1](History)
You can recall (and re-input) up to the ten most recent names you input in the EDIT NAME popup since turning
on the power. Selects the name at the cursor in the history list then press [ENTER].
[F2](Insert Space)
Inserts a space at the cursor location.
• [F3](Delete)
Deletes the character at the cursor location. Characters at the right of the cursor will be moved forward to fill
the gap.

A): switch character case
Switches the character at the cursor location between uppercase and lowercase.

Using the numeric keys to input characters

You can use the numeric keys to input alphanumeric characters. To select one of the various characters
(letter, number, or symbol) that appear on a numeric key, press the key a number of times. For example, if you
repeatedly press [3], you will cycle through the available choices for that key, which are: 3

Using the SHIFT button
You can use the Shift Lock parameter (Screen Guide; p. 175) to change the operation of the SHIFT button.
Inputting text
File names may not contain a blank space or certain symbols (“ * / : ; < > ? \ | •).
Volume label names may not contain a blank space, lowercase characters, or certain symbols (“ * + , . / : ; < =
> ? [ \ ] | •).
