Chapter 1

An overview of the MV-8800

Basic structure

Broadly speaking, the MV-8800 consists of five sections: controller, sequencer, sampler, mixer, and effects.

Controller section

This contains the velocity pads, sliders, and C (control) knobs. The performance data produced when you
strike the velocity pads or turn the knobs is sent from the controller section to the sampler section, the
sequencer section, and to external MIDI devices.

Sequencer section

This records the performance data from the controller section, and the MIDI messages from an external MIDI
device. The recorded performance data and MIDI messages can be transmitted to the sampler for playback.
By sending the recorded MIDI messages from the sequencer to MIDI OUT, you can control an external MIDI
device or a V-LINK device.

Sampler section

A sampler is a device that captures audio from an analog input, or imports a wave file from a hard disk or CD,
and holds this data as waveform data in wave memory (DIMM).
When the sampler receives performance data from the controller section or sequencer section, or MIDI
messages from an external MIDI device, it can play back these samples while varying the pitch, applying a
filter, or modifying the envelope, and output the resulting sound to the mixer section and effects section.

Mixer section

This mixes the audio output from the sampler section, effects section, and analog inputs, and outputs the
combined sound to the master outputs and to headphones.

Effects section

The sound from the sampler output and the sound from the analog inputs can be processed by the effects
section in a variety of ways.

For details on the types and specifications of DIMM that the MV-8800 can use, refer to “Wave Memory (RAM)”
(Appendices; p. 76).
