You can scc whichfontsarecuncntlyselectedon yourStar LaserPrinter8 by printinga statussheetin offlinemode,as mentionedat thebeginningof this chapter.AnotherTEST modemenuitem,describedin the Star Luser- Printer8 OperationsManual,also letsyouprint out a list of all thefonts availableon the printerat any givenmoment.
Selectingfonts
Most popular software packages, particularlyword processors, let you choosefontsfromwithintheprogram.Theysendtheappropriatecommands to the printerand you don’tneed to understandhow they do it. A4uhiilfate uscs pitchto identifydifferentfonts,for example,while WordPerfectuses printformats.The pointis, youmaynotevenhaveto worryaboutselecting which fontto use.
Butnotallpackagesdo thejob for you.If you arc in this situation,youcan selectany fontattnbutcmentionedabove,eitherfromthe frontpanelor by sendingan Escapesequencecommandin one of the emulationmodes.
If youuscthe frontpanelinprogrammode,you’llscctheseattnbutcsunder
the Font Attnbutcslevel of the EMULATIONAttributes menu. Just press the NEXT buttonto get to the font attnbutc you want to set, press ENTER to getto itspossiblevalues,pressNEXT to scanthroughthem,and finallypress ENTER to slap in the value you want.
The proceduresfor selectinga fontfrom a computerprogramis a bit more complicated,and dependson whichemulationmodeyou are using.These font selectionmethodsare detailedin the next four chapters.
