Here’s a way you can save yourself a few keystrokes: type in those commandsthat have the same command-categoryprefix as just one long Escape scquencc.To combinecommandsthis way, type the <ESC> and command-categoryprefixjust once, and capitalizeonly the last command character.

For example,to definethe style,weightand characterface for the primary font, you mightsend thesecommand:

whichwouldproduceitalicsboklfaceTms Romn. Butthissinglecommand does the same thing,all with onc blow:

You can check how your LaserPrinter8 is printingand have a look at its parametersettingsby sendingthis Self Test command:

Noticethatthez is lowercase;thisis theonlyLaserJetIIcommandthatends with ~smallletter.Afteryousenda SelfTestcommand,thepnntcr finishes printinganypagesleftin itsmemory.Thenon a newpageitprintsitscurrent parameters(justimportantitemssuchasnumberof copiesandfontsin use). The printer finishes off the page with a continuousdisplay of all the charactersin its defaultfont.

The printeralso quicklychecksits interface.Assumingit findsno trouble, theprinteris then readyfor yournextpage.If the printerdetectsa problcm it shows a front panel message, which you can look up in your Star LaserPrinter8 OperationsManual.
