13. ISDN CAPI Port Device Driver

Prerequisites for the CAPI Port installation

Before the CAPI port device drivers may be installed, the device drivers for the IBM International ISDN PC Card must be installed. If you already have CAPI port device drivers installed, reinstallation may not be possible without removing older driver versions. See “Removing the ISDN CAPI Port device driver” on page 179 for more details.

Version 02.02.01 for Windows 95 and 98

The ISDN CAPI Port Device Driver is a universal ISDN connectivity solution for the Microsoft Windows 95/98 operating system. It facilitates the use of Remote Access Services (RAS) and Dial-Up Networking connections to the Internet and to on-line services.

Technically, the ISDN CAPI Port Device Driver mediates between Windows 95/98’s UNIMODEM/VCOMM architecture and the applications interface COMMON-ISDN-API 2.0 (CAPI). The CAPI 2.0 interface, a manufacturer- independent standard, is provided with the ISDN-Controller and loaded by the Controller's installation program.

Virtual modems

After simple installation in Windows 95/98, the CAPI Port Device Driver supplies up to eight virtual modems which are immediately available for use. These modems allow the ISDN-Controller in your computer to be used even by programs that expect an analog modem.

Each of the virtual modems is available for a different application. For instance, the ISDN FAX (G3) modem is configured for fax applications, while ISDN RAS can be used for remote-access connections to remote computers.

The default configurations of the virtual modems allow them to be used immediately in most conventional implementations without any further configuration required. However, it is also possible to adapt the ISDN CAPI Port Device Driver for special cases such as the configuration of the Internet connection and RAS (see ” Modem Settings Using Registry Commands").

Programs that use the CAPI interface directly can exploit the CAPI Port modem to use the second B channel for their own use, parallel to an existing Dial-Up Networking connection. This is possible because the B-channel assignments are performed by CAPI automatically.
