Introduction to STM-0

The Synchronous Transport Module (STM)-0 card is an optical 51.85Mbps communication circuit designed to be used with an approved signaling gateway. Each of its 28 T1 lines can be configured as Signaling System 7 (SS7) data trunks. When configured as an SS7 data trunk, the signaling gateway takes control of the data trunks, instructing the TAOS unit when to bring calls up or down.

Note that the STM-0 card does not support Call-Routing profiles, PRI signaling, or inband signaling. Figure 16-1shows an example STM-0 configuration.
