Estimate the power budget as follows:
PB = 11.5 dB – 11 km (0.5 dB/km) – 10 (0.5 dB)
PB = 11.5 dB – 5.5 dB – 5 dB
PB = 1 dB
The resulting power budget (PB) value of 1 dB indicates that this link would ha ve suf ficient
power for transmission and would not exceed the maximum receiver input power.
Using Statistics to Estimate the Power Budget
Statistical models are more accurate in determining the power budget than “worst-case”
methods.
Determining the link loss with statistical methods requires accurate knowledge of
variations in the data link components. However, statistical power budget analysis is
beyond the scope of this document.

•1/4-inch flat-blade screwdriver
•3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver
•Number 2 Phillips head screwdriver
•ESD-preventive wrist strap
•Antistatic mat
•Tape measure
•Level
•10-mm wrench (boxed-end, socket, or nut driver)—for connecting DC source power
cables to the DC-input power supply terminals
