Terms Defined

node

A device on a network that has an address and can send and/

or receive data to and from other devices on the network. Also

refers to a number that identifies an access point on a

network. It works like an address.

On-Hook

You can dial a telephone/fax number or hear the other party,

but cannot talk to them. You can also send or receive a fax

manually when [On-Hook] is selected.

paper jam

A paper or media misfeed or jam occurring in the machine

during printing.

Pathway

The route or sequence a user is required to select buttons to

display a service, such as Copy or Fax.

PCL

An abbreviation of Printer Control Language, which is used by

Hewlett-Packard. This is a set of commands that tells a printer

how to print a document.

PCONSOLE

A NetWare utility that can be used to create, configure,

monitor, and manage queues on a NetWare server, and to

attach print servers to the queues.

PDF

An abbreviation of Portable Document Format. It is a file

format developed by Adobe Systems. A PDF file can describe

documents containing text and images, retaining all the

formatting and fonts of the original copy. The document can

then be displayed or printed, using application software,

hardware, or operating system, which may differ from that

used to create the original document.

PDL

An abbreviation of Page-Description Language. This refers to

a programming language, such as PostScript, that is used to

describe output to a printer or a display device, which then

uses the instructions from the PDL to construct text and

graphics and create the required page image.

Peer-to-Peer

A network environment in which the nodes communicate

directly with other nodes. Windows for Workgroups, NetWare

Lite, and Macintosh System 7 are examples of peer-to-peer

networking products.

photograph

An image, especially a positive print, recorded by a camera

and reproduced on a photosensitive surface.

polling

A feature that allows you to retrieve a document from a remote

machine.

POP3

An abbreviation of Post Office Protocol Version 3, a protocol

used for receiving e-mail. It is a commonly used

communications protocol (an agreement governing the way

data is transmitted). It provides a private mailbox on the

provider e-mail server that receives messages when a

connection is made. POP3 is a receive-only function, while the

corresponding function for sending e-mail is SMTP.

portrait
