Creating FTP archives

On a managed volume, a managed file contains file attributes, security information, HSM metadata, and the default data stream. In FTP archives, the managed file is stored in an envelope.

Because of how the managed file is stored, no direct file access is available except through a packing and unpacking utility. For more information, see Using FmaFileUtil to work with FTP archives on page 37.

Preparing FTP archives for FMA

FTP archives require additional configuration before they can be used with FMA. The RSA-FTP module uses FTP commands including the following, which are not supported on all servers:

STOR (Defined in RFC765)

RETR (Defined in RFC765)

MDTM (Extension)

SIZE (Extension)

The steps to make these commands available and to configure FTP archives to work with FMA vary depending on the FTP server and operating system, as described in the following sections. You must perform one of the following procedures.
